NATIONAL PARK PARTNERSHIPS
The Wadden Sea of the North Sea is unique natural landscape in the world. We are proud to be one of the National Park Partners since February 2018.
NATIONAL PARK S.-H. WADDEN SEA
The Wadden Sea of the North Sea is unique natural landscape in the world. Apart from the Alpine peaks, it is the only region in Central Europe that has been able to preserve its natural beauty over a large area. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park was established in 1985 as the third national park in Germany. With 4,400 km² it is the largest national park between the North Cape and Sicily. It is divided into several protection zones: Protection zone 1 is largely left to nature, protection zone 2 may be used to a limited extent.
DIVERSE LANDSCAPE
The Wadden Sea is an exceptionally diverse landscape. An extensive system of large tidal flat currents and small tidal creeks crisscross wide tidal flats and line firm, dry-fall sands. Mussel beds, seagrass beds, and mudflats provide close-up habitat for many animals. Blooming salt marshes alternate with white beaches and dunes. The diversity of the landscape makes the Wadden Sea a unique habitat for more than 10,000 animal and plant species.
WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE
Over time, the importance of the Wadden Sea has also been recognized internationally. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural and Communication Organization, inscribed the German and Dutch Wadden Sea on the World Heritage List at the end of June 2009. In 2014, the area was extended to include the Danish Wadden Sea. This now puts the entire Wadden Sea on a par with other world-famous natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
THE NATIONAL PARK AND MAN
In the national park, nature should be able to develop as it wishes. Thus, in a natural way through evolution, biodiversity is promoted by national parks. They protect all living creatures without particularly promoting individual species.
However, humans are not locked out of national parks. On the contrary, wherever no plants or animals are disturbed, he can and should experience wilderness. He can learn about nature there and enjoy the positive effects of spending time in the great outdoors.
NATIONAL PARK PARTNER
The importance of the national park itself and the protection of nature on our doorstep is also well known to the people and businesses of our region. Against this background, the association of national park partners was founded in 2003 and now has over 170 members.
The National Park Partners have a close relationship to the National Park and the goal to protect the fascinating Wadden Sea nature. They come from the sectors of accommodation, culinary, excursions, exhibitions, tourism service, nature conservation, travel, cycling and rail and work closely with the national park administration.
REQUIREMENT
The awarded companies and associations adhere to strict environmental criteria and thus contribute to the preservation of the Wadden Sea. An independent award council decides on the admission of new partners. The partnership is valid for two years. After that, an extension must be applied for, which in turn will be reviewed. This ensures that all partners continue to meet the requirements.
We are proud to be one of the National Park Partners since February 2018.
