EXPERIENCE PURE NATURE IN ST. PETER-ORDING
St. Peter-Ording is a paradise for nature lovers. The shifting sandbanks, the constantly flooded salt marshes, the fascinating mudflats and their inhabitants, the pine forest and the dunes together form a beautiful and unique landscape.
The highlight in SPO is the Wadden Sea. In 2009, the largest contiguous tidal flat landscape with 441,000 ha was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Wadden Sea is worth a visit at any time of the year. In the colder months, storm surges or even ice and snow can be observed on the beach. In spring and summer, the North Sea invites you to cool off and enjoy beautiful sunny hours on the beach.
Every six hours a day, the tidal flats are flooded at high tide and released at low tide. It shows alternately a beautiful mudflat landscape to the horizon or the effervescent North Sea. Every day there are large and small mudflat walks, together with a local mudflat guide you can explore the impressive mudflat landscape and its inhabitants.
Another treat for the senses are the three climate zones in SPO. Each of the three climate zones surf, dunes and salt marshes and the forest, has a positive effect on the well-being and health by its properties. Sulfur brines and the mud from the Wadden Sea let you relax, breathe deeply and recharge your batteries.
CLIMATE ZONE 1 – SURF
When walking along the surf, the pure North Sea air has a positive effect on the respiratory tract, alleviates respiratory diseases and has been proven to strengthen the immune system. This effect is due to the high concentration of aerosols sprayed into the air by wind and waves.
CLIMATE ZONE 2 – DUNES AND SALT MARSHES
Such aerosol concentrations can also be found in the dunes in a weakened form – here the stimulus to the organism is weaker. But the clear air with the fresh and practically pollen-free sea breezes is good and healthy for body and mind.
CLIMATE ZONE 3 – FOREST
More than a hundred years ago, the extensive pine forest was established in St. Peter-Ording. The North Sea’s frigid climate continues to mellow under the protection of the trees. UV radiation is also weaker here. In contrast to the beach, the pine forest is also characterized by peace, calm and the resinous aroma of the conifers.
LIFE IN THE WADDEN SEA
WADDEN SEA SPO PROTECTION STATION
The Wadden Sea Protection Stations offer a variety of events throughout the year. Particularly noteworthy here are, of course, the mudflat walks. But there is more to discover. Enjoy the North Sea under expert guidance while helping to protect it. The nature conservation society “Schutzstation Wattenmeer e.V.” is a private association founded in 1962. Through their manifold activities, he has contributed a great deal for years to awakening the understanding and fascination for the “Wadden Sea ecosystem” and the North Sea among vacationers and locals.
